EVENT INFORMATION
The 2008 Event has a Junior Scholarship section for dancers aged 9 years to 13 years & a Senior Scholarship section for dancers aged 14 years and above. The Senior Scholarship section is divided into two sections, one for Full-time dance students and one for Part-time dance students. Both Senior and Junior Scholarship entrants will partake in a master class / audition process. All entrants are requested to submit a one page CV / resume, headshot & dance photo prior to their audition. This is to help young dancers to prepare and experience a real audition process. All dancers may also be interviewed over the weekend. Workshops throughout the event also allow all dancers to benefit from famous guest artists. A “Career Management” lecture demonstration will also take place, with advice and tips on the Worldwide Dance Industry. All these lectures and workshops will then be put into practice on their audition day. This year all Junior and Senior Scholarship sections will also be invited to dance a solo of their choice, of any style, on Sunday, August 10th, which is open to the public viewing. This allows the participants the performance experience.
All participants are eligible to receive cash awards or scholarship grants to study at workshops both for within Australia and overseas. Recipients will be chosen by our Guest Adjudicators after being evaluated in their audition class and performance ability on stage. It is our policy that at least 4 local dancers will be offered a Grant to further their dance education. This year we have over 30 Scholarships. Scholarships include The Milwaukee Ballet - Milwaukee WI-USA, Boca Ballet Theatre - Boca Raton FL-USA, The Minnesota Dance Theatre - Minneapolis MI-USA, The English National Ballet - London England & many Prestigous Australian Dance institutions. A traineeship with Melbourne Ballet Company and even 4 Trainee contracts with The Tasmanian Ballet Company for their upcoming season will be available to qualifying candidates, so many wonderful opportunities in one beautiful location, surely makes our festival a worthwhile trip for any aspiring young dancer … Please visit the following website for details on Scholarships.

We strongly believe that our Festival allows young dancers the unique opportunity to combine all the elements they will eventually need to enter the performing arts industry. Although only over a few days, the experience of workshops, lecture demonstrations and mentoring with/from some of the world’s best professionals in the Industry, The audition, the preparation of before the audition, the performance experience and much more really will contribute to these young dancers futures. Even if they will not be awarded one of our scholarships, the experience for one and all is invaluable.

NIDA Open Program is pleased to announce that graduates from year-long music theatre course, Singer Dancer Actor continue to provide proof of the high quality training gained at NIDA. Hayden Tee and Shaun Rennie are currently on the Korean leg of the Cats Asian tour, Daniel Scott continues to star in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Belinda Wollaston has recently appeared in John Williamson’s Australian folk musical Quambatook, Danny Beiruti is appearing in Half a Sixpence in New York and Stevie Nicholson has been touring and appearing in television as a member Hi-5. All of these graduates feel Singer Dancer Actor was an essential element on the road to their success.
Core tutor Avigail Herman says:
“SDA is a very intensive year of training. Because of its time frame it is succinct, creative in its teaching and extremely focussed. It is a vocational course and for the right students is the kind of training which propels them to industry standard.”
NIDA’s year-long course, Singer Dancer Actor, is for aspiring music theatre professionals. The course covers acting and vocal techniques, dance and singing styles and scene work from the music theatre repertoire. Classes run in the evenings and on weekends over three terms (starting 2 February 2009) and the course culminates with a showcase performance for agents and professionals from the music theatre industry at NIDA in November.
Singer Dancer Actor is taught by specialists from the music theatre profession, including Avigail Herman, singer and former Head of Music at NIDA. Some recent graduates have appeared in professional productions both in Australia and internationally including Priscilla, Cats World Tour, Les Miserables, Shout!, Respect, Mamma Mia!, Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical, Godspell, Kiss me Kate, Moulin Rouge, The Lion King, The Producers, Titanic, Priscilla, Dusty and Hair.
Auditions for the 2009 course are being held at NIDA, Kensington on the 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 November 2008. Auditions are also being held in Melbourne on 23 November and Brisbane on 16 November. A Music Theatre Masterclass will be held in Melbourne and Brisbane on the day prior to the audition to allow applicants and others the opportunity of working with core Singer Dancer Actor tutor Avigail Herman.
Applications are due by Wednesday, 12 November 2008. Application forms and full course details are available on the NIDA website at www.nida.edu.au. Successful applicants can apply for financial assistance through various scholarships.
