Amy Edwards Jan 09
The West End is getting ready for the ride of its life with PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT rolling into town early next year! Set to Open at The Palace Theatre in March starring none other than our own JASON DONAVON as TICK!
The beautiful and undoubtedly talented AMY EDWARDS is making her WEST END debut in PRISCILLA and as she is one of our own and a regular featured performer in DANCEtrain I thought, it was only best to have a chat with her and get the gossip!
Congratulations and Chookas Amy!
AMY EDWARDSQ: Moments away from your WEST END debut how are you feeling and what are you most looking forward to?A: I'm very excited! It's a dream for a musical theatre performer to perform on West End so I can't wait to start! I'm looking forward to being back on stage every night, as well as working with the great cast. The whole experience is going to be amazing. Q: Do you have any advice on how to break into the West End scene?A: Having an agent obviously helps, but if you don't get one straight away there are open calls you can go to & there are also great magazines dedicated to stage performers so you can find out about all the auditions going on. Persistence pays off. It may be a hard scene to crack but if you have the passion & do as many auditions as you can, the right show will come up for you. Q: How have you found the industry in the UK compares to Australia?A: The industry is harder to crack here, as there are so many people! I found that you can be a big fish in a small pond in Australia, but you get here & you're a tiny fish in a huge pond so it's pretty overwhelming!I didn't let it intimidate me though, the people here are very supportive & they love Australians, which helps! The process of it all is similar, there's just a lot more competition. Q: What has helped you get to where you are today and what keeps you motivated?A: I'm very lucky in that I've always had such a supportive family & group of friends around me, encouraging me to do better & believing in me. I've never let rejection get the better of me, it just urges me to succeed more. If you have a strong head on your shoulders, & a real passion for the industry, you will get far. I've never given up, I love performing too much to let anything get in the way! If something seems out of your reach, you should only try harder to get it. My passion is what motivates me & that's something that's not going to go away! Q: What/who inspires you?A: Within the musical theatre family, I think Idina Menzel & Shoshana Bean - who both played Elphaba in Wicked, are incredibly talented & inspiring & will both have long-lived careers.
Q: Fave quoteA: I like to live by the motto, "Live every day like it's your last." It motivates me to continue doing what I love & never give up. Being on stage, in front of a camera & in a recording studio are my favourite places in the world so if I can be in one of those places everyday, I'd be a very happy girl.
