Audition Style Tips Nov 07
The number 1 tip, if you feel good you will look good!
The number 1 tip, if you feel good you will look good!
Gals & dudesIf auditioning for a musical, do your research and find out what style the musical was set in then duplicate it by visiting Op Shops and second hand stores. You will be amazed what you can find and how little it will cost you. I remember a girl who was laughed at by all her peers because she attended a Grease Musical Call wearing a full circle tulle skirt, blouse and hair and makeup in that era. She got the job, everyone stopped laughing!
Many auditions for Classical schools include audition attire on their application forms. Read all material very carefully as these forms represent the beginning of your audition.
Even if you haven’t been told to bring every style of dance shoe you own to the audition, do it anyway. Nothing shouts professionalism more than a well- prepared artist.
Keep jewelry to a minimum and remove anything that could scratch a dance partner. You want to be the dancer practicing the required lift straight away not the one running off to the side of the room removing rings and watches or even worse hurting a colleague because you’ve forgotten to remove dangerous items in the heat of the audition moment.
RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH
If you are not prepared to make every effort in the way you look seriously ask yourself if you really want the job because you can guarantee there are another 100 dancers at home doing EVERYTHING they can to ensure they look the part.
Don’t wear a hat unless it is character specific, the audition panel, choreographer and assistant need to see your eyes.
galsUnless your hair looks fabulous out after many turns, jumps and rolls on the floor wear it up with loads of spray and gel ensuring you look as fabulous at the end of the audition as when you began.
Keep makeup to a minimum and again if you are auditioning for a particular show, do your research and mimic the role.
Wear a good supportive bra or crop top.
If you are opting to wear long pants ensure you have bike pants underneath, I have seen too many girls embarrassed unnecessarily when asked to remove their long pants
dudesUnless specified wear well fitted long pants, track pants or dance pants. They make a much nicer leg line.
Always wear a good well fitted support (underwear). You can purchase these from a sports shop or dance retailer including BLOCH.
Style your hair to the era of the show you are auditioning for, even better invest in a trip to the barbers prior to the auditioning starting. It is amazing how much this transformation can help you enter the head space of the character you need to be to get the job you really want.
