DT: When is the best time to fit out a studio?
Emma Seedman: The best time is generally during school holidays as this has less impact on the running of the business and loss of income. As each studio is different, downtime for fit outs can vary. For some studios it may be either at start or end of term instead of the holidays if holiday classes are offered.
Depending on the size and scope of works required, the amount of time the studio will be out of action can vary from 1 day through to a week or more. Planning ahead makes a difference and to avoid disappointment it is best to get in early. With high demand for school holidays, the Christmas period in particular is often booked out by Aug/Sep.
Past experience has shown it can take up to 8 weeks for a dancer to become accustomed to the characteristics of a new floor. Allow ample time for your students to adjust and avoid changing your floor right before the examination period. This ensures a smoother transition for the dancer and can build confidence in technique and performance.
Fitting out a studio is a long term investment, it’s never too early to enquire!
