Redlands Dance Academy
2023 Showcase
On the 16th of November 2023, I had the pleasure of attending the Redlands Dance Academy’s end-of-year performance at The Concourse in Chatswood. The evening commenced with “Les Sylphides,” a ballet based on Mikhail Fokine’s production from 1909, set to Chopin’s music.
This ballet, set in a romantic moonlit park, featured a suite of dancers where magical figures danced with a poet. Before delving into “Les Sylphides,” the audience was treated to Yulia Furnas’s piece titled “The Gypsies,” a glorious display of character dance. The performers, adorned in gorgeous and vibrant costumes, executed delightful routines and motifs that captivated the audience. The technical skill displayed, particularly in the character movement, was commendable.
Following this was “Les Sylphides,” a visually delightful piece showcasing beautiful Port de Bras, with a particular emphasis on the upper body and head angles. The artistry and technique reached a professional standard, showcasing the artistic integrity of “Les Sylphides,” artistic director (Gilly Revie), and her entire team.
While this alone would have left a lasting impression, there were two more acts to follow. The second act presented the students’ contemporary work, titled “Still Life” featuring a diverse range of students from various dance levels and ages at Redlands. The collaboration between younger and older students was a special highlight, culminating in an ending that left the audience in awe. Choreographed by Katharine Boase, Anton, and Gillie Revie, showcased a beautiful standard that allowed students to execute and interpret the piece emotionally. Seeing children of all ages express themselves through dance in a way that resonated with them was truly special.
The final piece, “The Oscars,” was dynamic and featured routines from various genres, including tap, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, and musical theatre. The contrast in genres provided a fabulous experience for the audience, highlighting the students’ hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Throughout the entire night, the audience’s support and appreciation added to the joy of being in a theater filled with art enthusiasts celebrating their talented children. Congratulations to everyone involved! If given the opportunity, I highly recommend attending Redlands Dance Academy’s performance in 2024. It was an absolutely incredible evening, a testament to the talent and dedication of all participants.
