On 14 May, I had the pleasure of spending the day at Conroy Performing Arts College (CPAC) in Brendale (Brisbane), Queensland—a vibrant, creative hub where artistry meets real-world preparation. From observing high-energy rehearsals to speaking with faculty and students, one thing became clear: CPAC is deeply committed to nurturing versatile, passionate, and resilient performers ready for the demands of the industry.
My day began in the studio with Marcus Pearce, Course Advisor at CPAC and Senior Teacher and Choreographer at Conroy Dance Centre (CDC). Marcus brings over 15 years of international professional performance experience, having worked across Australia, Asia, and the United States. His credits include Dance Captain for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, a lead role in the Japanese television series Blue Dog Laughing, and Australian stage productions such as Pirates of Penzance, Fever with Rhonda Burchmore, and Inneuvre at Jupiters Casino.
Beyond performing, Marcus is a qualified examiner with Comdance (CSTD) and holds a Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management. His leadership at CPAC is instrumental in shaping industry-ready performers.
That morning, he led a demanding three-hour rehearsal with full-time and selected part-time students, working on a routine set to debut in just two weeks.
Despite the time pressure, Marcus remained composed and encouraging. His calm authority fostered a productive atmosphere. The students’ professionalism was striking—courteous, committed, and completely immersed. Their focus reflected the culture of discipline and care that defines CPAC.
Later that day, I observed a class with Danielle Bilios, an ED5International graduate from Sydney, who went onto to be Associate Choreographer for Moulin Rouge The musical, whose quirky commercial class brought fresh perspective and edge to the studio. The students’ ability to adapt quickly to a completely new style underscored CPAC’s commitment to versatility.
Danielle Bilios is a leading Australian choreographer and performer known for her work across major musical theatre productions including Billy Elliot the Musical and Mamma Mia!. Danielle has performed in shows such as Wicked, Fame, and Matilda, and alongside artists like Kylie Minogue, Taylor Swift, and Jessica Mauboy.
“Every guest artist brings something unique—whether it’s musical theatre, commercial, or contemporary,” one student shared. “It keeps us sharp and inspired.”
Faculty member Summer Till, who also serves as Student Officer and holds a TAE40116 Cert IV in Training and Assessment, explained CPAC’s philosophy: “We don’t just train in one genre. Our dancers graduate confident in tap, jazz, commercial, singing, partnering, and more. That versatility is what makes them employable.”
And the results speak for themselves. CPAC graduates have secured roles with top cruise lines including Celebrity, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean. One standout example is 19-year-old Summer Nash. “She walked into that audition prepared—polished, articulate, and confident,” Summer said. “The director didn’t hesitate.”
Abby Lennon, another alumna, recently wrapped a season of Cirque Alice at QPAC and is now preparing for a six-month international tour. Despite having secured professional work, Abby has returned to CPAC to continue training.
“I love it here,” she said. “I don’t want to lose momentum, and the teachers are so supportive.”
Abby credits CPAC’s holistic training: “I started as a lyrical dancer, but they shaped me into a commercial performer—exactly what my current contract requires. They’ve helped me with acro, presentation, CVs, showreels—everything.”
When asked what sets CPAC apart, she didn’t hesitate: “The teachers and the friends. It’s the best environment.”
CPAC’s flexibility allows students to continue their academic studies while pursuing professional training. Year 12 student Matilda Wood attends Sunshine Christian College but is released one day per week to study her Certificate IV at CPAC.
“I knew CPAC had a strong part-time program that worked around school,” Matilda shared. “Since starting, I’ve seen massive improvement—especially in my ability to pick up choreography quickly. Every day is different and exciting.”
Originally drawn to commercial jazz and lyrical, Matilda has expanded her repertoire. “Before CPAC, I’d never worn heels. Now I’m confident in cabaret, singing, and heels technique. It’s opened so many doors.”
For postgraduate student Lillybelle Olasz, who has been at CDC since age six, the college feels like home. Now a teacher herself, she shares her love of dance with students as young as two and a half.
“It’s always been my safe space,” she said. “From day one, everyone’s been welcoming. The teachers push you to be your best. I’ve made lifelong friends here.”
She holds teaching certificates through Comdance in ballet, tap, and jazz and is now completing her diplomas, which will allow her to teach students aged 16 and up.
“I’ve been assisting since I was 10,” she said. “Getting my qualifications gave me the confidence to lead a class. Now I get to help the next generation, and seeing their progress is everything.”
Students like Jayden Valentine, 16, are reaping the benefits of CPAC’s pathway model. Jayden attends Albany Creek State High School and trains at CPAC one day a week while working towards her Certificate III in Dance (to which CPAC partners with Empowerdance RTO 40397 to deliver all national qualifications).
“It’s helped me develop stamina and pick up choreography more easily,” she said. “Guest teachers have pushed me creatively and helped me bring more to my school dance assignments too.”
Her advice to other students? “Just do it. It’s amazing. Everything about CPAC is so good.”
Fifteen-year-old Phoebe Hardie attends CPAC one day a week in conjunction with her schooling. Phoebe has been at CDC since age three, and is already dreaming of Broadway. “I love seeing people smile when I dance,” she said. “I just keep working on every genre so I can be the best version of me.”
Phoebe finds motivation in the people around her. “I love seeing my friends every day and learning from incredible choreographers. I stay focused by thinking about my long-term goal.”
What truly sets CPAC apart is its culture of care. “We take the time to understand each dancer’s goals and whether our program aligns. We want to support their artistic and emotional development.” said Summer.
Under the leadership of director Shelle Conroy, CPAC continues to bring in top-tier choreographers like Lauren Elton, Euan and Mitchell Fistrovic-Doidge, Amy Lehpalmer, Cat Santos, Nathan Wright, and Dani Bilios. “These aren’t just workshops,” said Shelle. “They’re helping our students network within the industry. That familiarity can make all the difference.”
Conroy Performing Arts College is more than a place to train—it’s a launchpad, a support system, and a family. In an industry that demands excellence and resilience, CPAC is cultivating not just performers, but people.
As Summer beautifully summed it up: “Whether our students end up onstage, in a classroom, or behind the scenes, we want them to keep showing up for their passion. That’s the artist’s life.”
