Expands the Pathway
Kalirena Pointe was founded with a clear mission: to provide adult dancers with a dedicated space to train with professionalism, care, and respect. As the studio continues to grow, however, its vision is expanding beyond the classroom. Today, Kalirena Pointe is actively creating artistic pathways, performance experiences, professional collaborations, and international opportunities that challenge traditional ideas of what an adult dance journey can become.
For founder Tianye Kang, this next chapter has been driven by listening to the ambitions of the dancers around her. Some students are seeking performance opportunities, others wish to explore choreography, undertake examinations, or pursue highly specialised technical goals. In response, Tianye has developed a personalised approach, working as a bridge between dancers and teachers to ensure students are connected with the right expertise to support their individual journeys.
“There is now a clearer focus on creating milestones, whether that is performance opportunities, examinations, or personal goals that allow each dancer to continue growing,” Tianye explains.
This evolution has also led to an organic expansion of the studio’s artistic offerings. Contemporary choreography and disco ballet classes have emerged from the desire of adult dancers to create and express themselves beyond traditional classwork, while new partnerships with Balletiks, Latin Fusion and Traditional Chinese Dance will broaden the timetable and introduce dancers to a wider range of movement practices.
The spirit of these opportunities was recently demonstrated through Kalirena Pointe’s character dance performance group. Under the direction of choreographer Yulia Furnas, adult dancers learned a new work in just five weeks before presenting the piece twice at Redlands School International Celebration Day. The project highlighted not only the dedication of the dancers, but also the importance of creating achievable, high-quality performance experiences tailored to adult students.
Beyond performance, Kalirena Pointe has also opened the door to experiences many dancers may never have imagined possible. The recent collaboration with Everline Imagery and Tutuplazzo offered students the opportunity to step into a professional photoshoot environment, complete with exquisite costuming, styling, and imagery designed to celebrate them as artists.
The event was structured as a non-profit initiative and brought together people connected through a shared desire to give back to the dance community.
“I love seeing our students’ happy faces and the look they have when they realise how beautiful they truly are in professional costuming and staging,” Tianye says. “We had the ultimate honour to create and capture these unforgettable moments for them.”
This commitment to creating meaningful artistic experiences extends beyond the adult students at Kalirena Pointe and into the professional world. Through Tianye’s continued connection with her fellow graduates from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA), a group of alumni were brought together for a performance at the Sunrise Conference at Carriageworks, with choreography created by Elliot Bourke.
The six dancers, all AMPA graduates and Tianye’s classmates, were selected for their professionalism, movement quality, and strong work ethic. The project represented a unique meeting point between the creative and corporate sectors, reinforcing a new way of thinking about how dance can be supported and experienced outside traditional performance spaces.
“The experience solidified a core truth for me: arts need funding to sustain, and business needs inspiration to succeed,” Tianye reflects.
Following the success of the Sunrise Conference, Kalirena Pointe is now preparing another innovative collaboration that will once again connect dance with the corporate world. While details remain under wraps, the exclusive invitation-only event will feature teacher Claudia Nicholson, also known as Ballerina DJ, alongside new Michael Jackson-inspired choreography by Nathalia Henao Rodriguez.
For Tianye, each of these initiatives is part of a larger commitment to expanding what is possible within the dance landscape. The goal is not simply to provide classes, but to create genuine experiences that allow dancers to perform, collaborate, learn from leading artists, and connect with the wider creative industry.
As Kalirena Pointe looks towards 2027 and beyond, it is becoming a place where opportunities continue to unfold in unexpected ways. From a student stepping in front of a professional camera for the first time, to graduates performing for corporate audiences, to dancers training with internationally respected teachers, the message is clear: a dance journey does not have to follow a traditional timeline to be ambitious, meaningful, or artistically rich.
