Shani Sweetnam is part of a new wave of commercial jazz artists redefining what it means to be both a powerhouse performer and a deeply trusted creative collaborator. Known for her discipline, adaptability, and unwavering work ethic, she has built a career grounded in consistency, curiosity and connection, qualities that have earned her repeat bookings, leadership roles, and the respect of artists and choreographers across Australia. With a growing portfolio of international-calibre work and a move to the UK on the horizon, Shani stands at a pivotal moment in her career: one shaped by resilience, lifted by community, and driven by a relentless commitment to excellence.

Sweetnam speaks about her career with a clarity and grounded-ness that reflects exactly how she works in every rehearsal room she steps into. “The qualities that really define me as a professional dancer are my discipline, my reliability, and my genuine commitment to growing every single day,” she says, describing an approach that has shaped her reputation across Australia’s commercial dance scene. Showing up prepared, on time, and ready to give everything isn’t something she performs for effect, it’s the bedrock of her identity. “It means a lot to me to be someone that creatives and other dancers know they can count on. Even in high-pressure situations, I stay focused and grounded.”
Equally central to her practice is the way she builds relationships. “Networking has never been something I force; it’s something I genuinely enjoy, because I love connecting with people, learning from them, and feeling part of a community that lifts each other up.” Through that mix of professionalism and warmth, Shani has built not just a career, but a circle of trust that surrounds her wherever she works. And underpinning it all is her self-described mindset of being “forever a student.” She’s constantly refining, questioning, experimenting, “staying curious” is what keeps her work fresh and keeps her evolving project after project.

One of her most significant milestones came when she worked with Kylie Minogue, a moment she describes as transformative. “Contributing to a project for such an iconic, internationally celebrated artist was a major milestone for me,” she reflects. “The standard of excellence required for that job affirmed my ability to perform at a world-class level.” It also reinforced her standing as a high-calibre commercial jazz dancer, capable of delivering under extraordinary pressure.
Her work with high-profile artists paints a striking picture of versatility. “My work with Kylie Minogue stands out because performing for such an iconic artist comes with significant pressure and exceptionally high standards,” she explains, but her projects with Adam Lambert and Sophie Ellis-Bextor tested something entirely different. “Both jobs happened during the same week. Managing two productions simultaneously meant learning and polishing a large amount of choreography in just a few days.” Rapid retention, adaptability, and consistency under pressure became the pillars of her performance. Meanwhile, television projects for Ava Max and Melanie C highlighted her on-camera precision. “TV environments are fast-paced and often stressful,” she says. “Working as a dancer on television comes with an intense amount of pressure. You must deliver a clean and consistent performance straight away. There’s also the challenge of adapting quickly to last-minute choreography changes, tight production schedules, and the constant presence of cameras and crew. On top of that, I’m always aware that each performance can impact future opportunities, so the expectation to look my best and deliver flawless work never really turns off. It’s an incredible job, but the pressure behind the scenes is very real.”

Beyond performing, Shani has also begun stepping into roles that support and elevate the work of others. This year, she was given the opportunity to movement-coach an artist under New Ground Collective, a role that blends mentorship with artistry, helping performers develop their physicality, storytelling and confidence.
She has also taken on Dance Captain responsibilities across major jobs, learning to guide teams while supporting the vision of the creatives. “Being trusted in those moments when ideas are still developing has given me a deeper understanding of the creative process,” she says.
Her contribution extends further still, assisting choreographers at large-scale conventions and refining choreography throughout production preparation.
She cites the TikTok Awards and SSN as major examples of moments where her behind-the-scenes leadership shaped the result, “I was assisting with preparation and choreography alongside the team at New Ground Collective,” she says of the TikTok Awards. For SSN, she stepped into a Dance Captain role, supporting the dancers through a demanding performance process. Movement coaching has become another defining element of her creative identity, “a rewarding opportunity to help artists strengthen their stage presence, storytelling, and overall performance quality.”

Perhaps the clearest marker of her impact, however, is the consistency with which she is rehired. “Honestly, that’s something I value more than anything, it’s the clearest sign of trust,” she says. For the past three years, she has been booked almost continuously by New Ground Collective, a company known for selecting very small teams. “Being brought back each time is something I never take for granted,” she says. “It reflects not just my ability, but my reliability, my attitude, and the confidence they have in my work.” What makes it even more meaningful is that those opportunities have evolved into assistant and Dance Captain roles. “It’s incredibly rewarding to feel that growth in my relationship with the company, taking on more responsibility, more creative input, and more trust.”
Her commitment to the dance community is equally long-standing. “I’ve been actively contributing to the Australian dance community since I was 18,” she says. Teaching at top studios, flying interstate for workshops and intensives, and mentoring emerging dancers has become a substantial part of her identity. “My aim is always to nurture the next generation by giving them tools, insights, and inspiration that go beyond the studio.”
Looking ahead, Shani is preparing to move to the UK to step into one of the world’s most influential commercial dance environments. “My primary goal is to immerse myself in the UK’s commercial dance industry,” she explains. She intends to work across major productions, tours, commercial campaigns, music videos, and television. “I bring years of experience performing and training at a high level in Australia,” she says, and she plans to continue mentoring, teaching, and building community abroad. “My overarching goal is both to grow as an international commercial jazz artist and to enrich the UK dance sector through performance, creative collaboration, and youth development.”

Ask her what makes her a strong candidate internationally, and she speaks with both humility and conviction. “My training, versatility, and professional track record all contribute,” she says. “But beyond technique, I bring a strong work ethic and attitude. I’m reliable, professional, and committed to delivering every time.” It’s this combination of technical depth, adaptability, and consistency that continues to define her career.
She is equally candid about the challenges. “Working in the commercial jazz industry is an ongoing obstacle, both mentally and physically,” she says. The physical demands are relentless, but the mental resilience required can be even tougher. “You must push yourself to keep going after hearing ‘no’ far more times than anyone ever talks about.”
She has navigated strict casting expectations, the pressure of being hired for a specific look or style, and audition processes that involve multiple rounds of cuts. “Instead of letting that discourage me, I used it as motivation,” she says. “When those limited spots existed, I wanted to have the professionalism and presence to stand out.”

Surviving and thriving in one of the most competitive fields in the industry has shaped Shani into an artist of determination, intelligence, and unwavering commitment. Her story is not just one of talent, but of discipline, curiosity, leadership, and a deep love of community, qualities that continue to define her work, and that will undoubtedly carry her into the next chapter of her international career.
