In a conversation with Elena de Cinque and Sarah Daher, the duo shared insights into the spectacular 2023 Paris Tour, a journey that left a lasting impression on both students and organisers alike. Elena expressed that 2023 was hailed as the best tour ever, prompting a discussion with her ‘right-hand person’ Sarah Daher to unravel the elements that contributed to its success.

The context of the tour, being the first one after the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, naturally added an extra layer of excitement. The anticipation of touring again as a group, combined with the unique experiences offered, made it a memorable venture. The students, donned in meticulously prepared attire with hair and makeup done as early as 6 am each morning, embarked on a series of activities and performances, including two 20-minute routines at the Paris Disney theme park over eight days. The itinerary also encompassed two workshops – a dance and a musical theatre workshop during the July 2023 school holidays.

At the helm of organising these tours is Mario de Cinque, the planner and organiser, who ensures the seamless execution of the entire event. Elena emphasised her preference for managing the tours in-house, citing the flexibility it offers in choosing workshops, classes, accommodation, and other logistical aspects.

Elena, the creative force behind the tour, takes charge of producing and designing the captivating 20-minute shows required for the performances, with the talented team of Phillip Filo & Deb Whitelock choreographing the show. Assisted by Sarah Daher, a former student who participated in similar tours years ago, the 2023 tour to Paris Disneyland emerged as a resounding success. The tour not only showcased the students’ talents but also fostered strong relationships among students and families, contributing to the overall energy and camaraderie of the entire studio.

Reflecting on the challenges posed by the previous tour, which was bound for Florida in 2020, Elena recalled the significant impact of the sudden onset of COVID-19. With two casts and a total of around 300 participants, the tour faced unprecedented obstacles. The subsequent two years deprived a majority of the cohort of the tour experience, leading to financial and emotional stress. Elena acknowledged the strain on Mario, whose unwavering commitment to business ethics ensured eventual reimbursement but took six months to resolve.

So, what made the 2023 tour different? Elena pointed out the eagerness among people for the next tour after the pandemic-induced hiatus. The anticipation was palpable, especially among those who had been part of the 2020 tour and younger individuals who were now eager to experience a tour themselves. Overcoming the initial struggles and uncertainties, the tour planning process, which usually takes 12 to 18 months, remarkably condensed to just seven months, thanks to a shared vision between Mario and Elena.

With a well-defined formula that includes a rehearsal day and a welcome dinner, the 2023 group comprised 105 people, including students, their families, and the staff. Elena attributed the success of the tour to the combination of a post-COVID environment, the allure of Paris, and the distinct European mindset that allowed for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Sarah Daher added that the tour was unique as it marked the first travel experience for many post-COVID. The excitement and adrenaline were palpable, contributing to the overall positive atmosphere throughout the journey.

Elena emphasised the transformative impact of the tour on the studio community. The connections forged among students and families during the tour continued to grow, fostering pride and loyalty to the studio. The changing demographics of families, from one-income households in the early ’90s to today’s two-income families with less time, influenced their perspective on the tours. Families now see the tours not only as an opportunity for their children but also as a chance to explore multiple destinations while on the trip.

Describing the daily routine on tour, Sarah highlighted the disciplined approach with students ready at 6 am, impeccably dressed, showcasing a commitment to education beyond the stage performances.

Elena shared the long-lasting impact of these tours, recounting how former students reminisce about them during weddings and other celebrations. The tours are often regarded as one of the best childhood experiences, creating memories that transcend time. The connections formed among parents further contribute to the joyous and enduring spirit of the studio community.

Acknowledging the missed aspects of the 2023 tour, Elena expressed the desire to reintroduce classes and competitions in future tours. Competing in Europe, she explained, adds a unique dimension, with the energy and hype being unparalleled. The exposure to different styles and techniques from dancers worldwide enhances the overall experience for the students.

Addressing the frequency of tours, Elena shared her preference for allowing families time to gather funds and generate excitement about the previous tour before embarking on a new one. Typically touring every two to three years, ensues a thoughtful and well-executed tour.

Looking ahead, Elena envisions a return to larger tour groups, building on the newfound confidence post-2023. The goal is to incorporate additional classes and potentially reintroduce competitions, enriching the experience for the participating students.

In essence, the 2023 Paris Tour, with its unique blend of post-pandemic enthusiasm, European charm, and the magic of Disney, stands out as a testament to the resilience and creativity of the studio community. As plans for future tours unfold, the focus remains on providing students with transformative experiences and connecting them with the broader world of performing arts.
